netWORK IT

As a designer networking is SUPER important! Networking happens everywhere, so make sure you're professional at any and all times. In order to network yourself, you have to meet people. Attending career fairs and events are one way to do that.

This semester I was given the opportunity to attend the career fair at the University of Kentucky and visit Ethan Allen along with many other design firms. In every case, I was sure to dress professionally and have confident conversations with successful professionals. In doing so, I was able to hand out resumes and make connections with people that could possibly give me a job in the future.

My favorite firm visit was our IDSA trip to Ethan Allen. While I'm not entirely sure that I am interested in doing residential design, I was able to ask questions about client/designer communication, other networking opportunities, and interview tips. I received (what I thought to be) my most important piece of advice from Gayle Cornett, an interior designer at Ethan Allen. She said to value your work and believe in yourself. This piece of advice really inspired me to put all of me into my design work and has made me a better designer in the long run.
